If there are liquidity issues, such as insufficient funds to fulfill a transaction, the channel might close to ensure no one is left hanging. Similarly, poor internet connectivity or network problems can disrupt communication between nodes, leading to a channel closure as a precautionary step🌐.

Forced closures

If there are liquidity problems, like not having enough funds to complete a transaction, the channel might close to prevent any issues. Likewise, poor internet connectivity or network disruptions can interfere with node communication. Nodes may go offline or become unresponsive, causing the channel to close as a precaution. 🌿

Manual closures

Manual closures can also occur, whether initiated by a user or automatically by the system. These are not errors, but rather intentional actions to maintain the integrity and reliability of the network. They ensure that the system runs smoothly and securely for everyone involved. 🔒

Recommendation if your channel was force closed during a period of high fees

Occasionally, unexpected events occur on the Bitcoin mainnet, such as significant fee spikes, sometimes up to 500x. Here is an example of such an event. (Picture from mempool.space). During these fee spikes, it’s recommended to not open a channel immediately after it has been closed, as the fees will be abnormally high. If your channel was force closed during an event like this, I suggest waiting until you receive an announcement from us via email if you’re an Alby Hub Cloud subscriber. We’ll provide a clear update on the situation, and when it’s possible and appropriate, we’ll coordinate with the LSPs involved with the issue to reopen the channels for you free of charge. (only for Alby Hub's Cloud Subscribers). So, the best course of action is to wait for an email announcement from us.
