# Why do I need an unlock password?

The Alby Browser Extension unlock password is used to secure your wallet and prevent access by others using Alby in the same browser. It is therefore comparable to a PIN on your mobile phone. The password is used to encrypt and decrypt connection data (e.g. macaroons, passwords, and other credentials).
