# Advanced: Increase Lightning Balance with on-chain bitcoin

## Introduction

To increase your lightning balance you need to either top up your balance ([guide](/user-guide/alby-hub/wallet/buy-bitcoin.md)) or open a lightning payment channel using the bitcoin On-Chain Balance in your Hub. Opening a new channel helps you to accomplish the following:

* Transfer funds from your On-chain Balance to your Lightning Balance
* Top up your Lightning Balance
* Be ready to send bitcoin via the lightning network
